news with natalie 08302010

time for an update! here are the most important things of the day (if you happen to be looking at the world through a kaleidoscope, like i am).

ONE: corgis on a treadmill? why??? check out this adorable video. i know there are really only two corgis…but are there really only two corgis?! YOU decide!

TWO: iowa contributes to national news? this is definitely newsworthy. iowa state used their carillon to play lady gaga’s BAD ROMANCE. the video is over five minutes long (which may be longer than the actual song), so don’t waste your time watching it. just revel in the fact that iowa is once again leaving its mark on this amazing nation.

THREE: angry man tries to pay his property tax with 33,000 pennies. i love this story so much, but that’s really all there is to it. he went to the treasurers office and tried to pay his $330 property tax, in pennies, but was DENIED. justice? where is the JUSTICE? if you want to read more about this amazing story, check it out here on gawker.

FOUR: oh my godddd, can you even handle this photograph? i love this so much, mostly because of this quote: ‘once the shock wears off, i’m sure she’ll say yes.’ yeah? are you sure? who is this guy anyway? it doesn’t matter. anyway, in reference to this photo, i say mostly because let’s not forget his amazing pants, tan, or tattoos. his dead stare makes me wish he was asking me. but i digress.

FIVE: this faaaantastic gem of a german man, thilo sarrazin finally broke the silence about jews, and said that ‘all jews share a certain gene.’ yeah? cool! maybe we should put them somewhere where they can all be together, comfortably. maybe…in a…camp! sorry thilo, someone already thought of that. read more on that here.

well, that’s that! see you next week for news with natalie!

love always,

FILMS 08162010

here are some films that i’m currently interested in seeing.

this one is called MONSTERS which for me conjures not only MONSTERS (like in cloverfield, godzilla, and monsters inc, naturally, HA) but also MONSTER (as in CHARLIZE THERON, but not like this, more like this). cool!

the story follows a journalist who is sent to retrieve his boss’s daughter (BUMMER) after a NASA PROBE crashes in mexico with some sort of foreign life attached to it.  i’ve posted the trailer below.

wait, a NASA PROBE????????? cool! i don’t think the trailer looks that good, but the following clip, as well as the knowledge that it was filmed with only 5 crew members on a very small budget makes me very interested in seeing the film.

the second film i’m reasonably interested in seeing is called CATFISH, and it sounds absolutely banal, except it was a darling at sundance (you can read this rave review). i mean, how many movies get a grade of A+?? only babe, pig in the city, according to roger ebert (review here). anyway, catfish is about FACEBOOK but it’s not the facebook movie (sigh), wait HA. guys who am i kidding, what’s the deal with this facebook movie anyway? what a gem of an idea!

here’s the CATFISH trailer.

i have to say, i am definitely INTRIGUED.

80′s Music Videos: Theme From 2010

I have decided to start an occasional series that spotlights an 80′s video. The videos spotlighted will be rare, unusual, creative or ones that are well-known.   So to start off not only the series but the year is, appropriately enough, the video “Theme From 2010″ by The Police member Andy Summers.  The song is an updated version of “Also Sprach Zarathustra”.  The movie which the theme was taken from is the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s “2001″.  The music video incorporates scenes from “2010″ and of Andy Summers in a great way. Enjoy!

“Time Piece” by Jim Henson

My old pal A.K. introduced me to this little film called “Time Piece”. It is an experimental film that was created by Jim Henson back in 1965. It has some classic Henson elements, such as: dancing chickens, explosions, jazz drummers, colorful animated shapes, naked children, strippers, and chaos. It was nominated for an Oscar.

IMDB says this:

Dislocation in time, time signatures, time as a philosophical concept, and slavery to time are some of the themes touched upon in this nine-minute, experimental film, which was written, directed, and produced by Jim Henson-and starred Jim Henson! Screened for the first time at the Museum of Modern Art in May of 1965, Time Piece enjoyed an eighteen-month run at one Manhattan movie theater and was nominated for an Academy Award for outstanding short subject.

ps- Frank Oz is also in it.

Lollapalooza: Day One

I’ve heard a lot of people say things along the lines of “I would die before going to Lollapalooza.” or “The crowds and heat are atrocious!”   Well, even though the latter is definitely true, I still couldn’t not buy a three-day pass.  Here’s my rundown of day one:

Ben Folds: I’m not a huge fan or terribly familiar, but I do have a couple of his albums (Whatever and Ever and Amen and The Unauthorized Biorgraphy of Reinhold Messner).  I didn’t recognize all the songs he played, but hearing hits, such as “Kate” and “Army” was enjoyable.  Grade: B

1 Bitch Went Nutz
2 Effington
3 Landed
4 Bitches ain’t shit
5 Dr. Yang
6 Hiroshima
7 Rockin the Suburbs
8 Kate
9 Narcolepsy
10 You Don’t Know Me
11 Army

Crystal Castles: This band is some indie techno import that I was really excited to see.  Maybe it was the fact that we were standing kind of far back and it was raining and cold, but I wasn’t that impressed.  Overall, the performance seemed uninspired, or inspired by Karen O.  Grade: C-

Thievery Corruption: Ugh, I hate most global sounding stuff that isn’t actually global, and TC was no exception.  Supposedly, one of their songs was played in the movie, Garden State.

Peter, Bjorn and John: This is a band that opened for Depeche Modes and one that I’ve been meaning to check out.  I didn’t get to see much, and I think I’m still going to have to listen to an album or two to understand them.

Nothing to Worry About
Living Thing
It Beats Me Every Time
??
Amsterdam
It Don’t Move Me
Lay It Down
Just the Past
Young Folks
Objects of My Affection
Up Against the Wall

Of Montreal: I’ve seen these guys before.  It was enjoyable like the last time and they do wacky shit, so good show.  Wacky shit examples: girl on cross-like structure; 10-foot long orange hairy arms; bunches of balloons and confetti; weird masks; etc. Grade: B+

Depeche Mode: Ah, the main band I really wanted to see.  And, it was nothing short of amazing.  DM made use of the jumbotrons by incorporating some goth art (a red, blinking eyeball above a picture of a single crow) and some confusing art (a young black man’s face. then a fat person in a circle running like a hampster wheel.  then an old gandolf-looking man.  let me know if you get this.).  They played for about an hour and forty-five mintues and played a good mix of new and old stuff.  Unfortunately, they did not play my favorite DM song, But Not Tonight.  Oh, well. Another note is that DM could not have played in a more appropriate atmosphere than they did last night: completely overcast sky that threatened rain against the super modern skyscrapers.   Grade: A+

I would be okay if Lollapalooza was only one day because it’s 94 degrees out today and I’m already exhausted.  I’m lazy, but if you are really interested in looking at all the set-lists/photos, etc, the Lolla website is pretty handy.  hope i survive the next two days.
