here are some FILMS i’m looking forward to.

MICMACS

this inventive, beautifully shot trailer makes me so excited to see the film. i love how dark and theatrical it looks. from jean-pierre jeunet, the guy responsible for amelie and delicatessen (not to mention alien, resurrection), comes this very interesting story about a man with a bullet in his brain.

WINTER’S BONE

a young woman is forced to find her missing father, a meth cook, who has posted the family’s property for his bail. this trailer doesn’t look that intriguing, but the film has received fabulous reviews, including two prizes at sundance (grand jury as well as screenwriting), and four stars from ebert.

127 HOURS

ok dudes, i’m going to be honest here. i love james franco. a lot. i also have a very tough time taking him seriously (meaning: i can’t). i could NOT STOP LAUGHING while watching this trailer, although i find aron ralston’s story very compelling. that being said, i do like danny boyle, and i do want to see this film. but i hope james franco doesn’t smile through the whole thing, because if he is, i will be too.

I AM LOVE

this film follows a russian woman (tilda swinton) who marries into an aristocratic italian family. it seems to be a story of love, sex, and deception, and the trailer has some heavy symbolism (the bird unable to escape near the end of the trailer). apparently, swinton learned to speak italian with a russian accent, although i am a BIT concerned that they only included one line of monologue from her. however, like winter’s bone, this movie has gotten great reviews, so i’m definitely looking forward to seeing it.

here are some films that i’m currently interested in seeing.

this one is called MONSTERS which for me conjures not only MONSTERS (like in cloverfield, godzilla, and monsters inc, naturally, HA) but also MONSTER (as in CHARLIZE THERON, but not like this, more like this). cool!

the story follows a journalist who is sent to retrieve his boss’s daughter (BUMMER) after a NASA PROBE crashes in mexico with some sort of foreign life attached to it.  i’ve posted the trailer below.

wait, a NASA PROBE????????? cool! i don’t think the trailer looks that good, but the following clip, as well as the knowledge that it was filmed with only 5 crew members on a very small budget makes me very interested in seeing the film.

the second film i’m reasonably interested in seeing is called CATFISH, and it sounds absolutely banal, except it was a darling at sundance (you can read this rave review). i mean, how many movies get a grade of A+?? only babe, pig in the city, according to roger ebert (review here). anyway, catfish is about FACEBOOK but it’s not the facebook movie (sigh), wait HA. guys who am i kidding, what’s the deal with this facebook movie anyway? what a gem of an idea!

Who Cares?

1. Don’t Care: Carrie Prejean

To begin with, cool name! But more importantly– who cares about this vapid woman? So she voiced her opinion about gay marriage. Many people think marriage is between a woman and a man. Many more important fucking people think so. She’s Miss California. That’s a made-up title that has no responsibility tied to it. So why do we care about this? It’s unclear. It is really great that she has received an undue amount of celebrity appeal for making a common ignorant statement, but I guess that’s how Ann Coulter got famous too. What I’m trying to say is this: she may be wrong, but let’s stop talking about it.

2. Care: Leon the Professional

Last night, I watched Leon the Professional, a Luc Besson film (of Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita fame). This is the story of a young girl (Natalie Portman) whose family is murdered. She is taken in by a hitman (Jean Reno), who, encouraged by her fervor for revenge, teaches her his trade. I really enjoyed the movie, which reminded me in some ways of The Fifth Element (Natalie Portman’s haircut, the wide angled shots at the beginning, the slow zooms, Gary Oldman), but at the end, the coherence began to taper. It was as if they were trying to tie the story up quickly and neatly at the very end–which didn’t make sense, since I thought the movie was over forty minutes early!

Jan Svankmajer

jan svankmajer is a surrealist filmmaker from prague. he’s made a good number of films, often incorporating stop-motion animation and/or puppetry. tim burton likes him a lot, but the communists do not, and back in 1972, they forced him to stop making films.

later, he made more films.

i haven’t seen any of his features, but after watching some youtube stuff, i really want to see them.

movie challenge 2005: chapter 9

sorry everybody. i’ve been busy with band stuff and label stuff lately.

i’ve got a little bit of free time at the moment, so let’s get back into the movie challenge. right where we left off…

i haven’t felt like doing anything but sleeping for a couple months now. it’s getting bad. i gotta get out of here.

Bones:

not as bad as i expected. it actually had some neat visuals early on, and snoop dogg wasn’t as dreadful as i expected him to be. however, the movie was boring. it never really went anywhere, especially anywhere unexpected, and the end just got stupid. it’s not even a movie to watch for a good chuckle. don’t bother with it.

 

The Boston Strangler:

made in 1968. just 4 years after the killings had ended. i really liked the cinematography and editing. richard fleischer did a lot of split screen shots and cool cropping. i found it rather artistic and unique. but like with all movies ‘based on actual events’, they didn’t really go for realism. actual events were changed to work into the plot twists and to fit the angle they were going for. they made the boston strangler into a split personallity disorder, which wasn’t correct or even speculated in the real case. one interesting thing about the real case is that many people think the boston strangler is still alive and living in the boston area. i found the real story to be fascinating, and recommend anyone interested in serial killers to look into it. i also recommend the film. it’s not accurate, but it’s a well done movie.

The Bunker:

the title is dumb, and the cover is more dumb, but the movie wasn’t that bad. it’s about a small group of german soldiers during ww2. they’re in a bunker. they think the enemy is beginning to surround them, they’re running out of ammo, and they can’t get ahold of any other germans. to top it off, none of them really like each other, and the tunnels built beneath the bunker are supposedly haunted. you never really know if it is haunted, or if they’re just going crazy, or what. the movie never reallly gets suspenseful or anything. it’s decent and made on a small budget, but it seems like it could have been better.

 

Bram Stoker’s Dracula:

i actually didn’t like it much. maybe i expected too much from it? i dunno. i never got into it. i did like some of the visuals and effects and stuff, but it’s not gonna make it on my top horror movies list. i’m sorry. i know that coppola is supposed to be awesome, but he did not impress me at all with this film. and again i want to know why the fuck anyone would give keanu reeves any role more than ‘cop number 1’ or ‘shopkeep’ or ‘extra’.

METROPOLIS: FOUND

One of the most tantalizing prospects for art and/or pop culture enthusiasts is the “lost” work…a piece that once existed and now does not, or something that never was in the first place. An offshot of this is the truncated or fragmented work, where elements of a project are available but, for whatever reason, the final product as envisioned is no longer available or was never allowed to reach fruition. In music, perhaps the most famous example is the album Smile, The Beach Boys‘ follow-up to their masterpiece Pet Sounds. As for comics, Jack Kirby’s Fourth World saga was only allowed a few years of publication before being cancelled. But it’s probably the movies that have lost the most: around 80% of all the films made between 1894 and 1930 no longer exist.
The reason for such a low survival rate for movies of this period can be attributed to several factors: the film stock of the time was highly flammable and prone to deterioration, the studios at the time saw little reason to keep movies that had played through their theatrical run and subsequently trashed, or prints were destroyed in order to obtain silver nitrate to strike new prints from, to name but a few. With all of these obstacles in the way of a film from the silent era surviving to the present day, it’s always heartening when one that was thought lost is found; but when a complete print of an all-time cinema classic is uncovered for the first time in 80 years, it’s little short of a miracle. Yet this is what happened when yesterday it was announced that the full 210 minute version of German autuer Fritz Lang‘s science fiction masterpiece Metropolis has been found…in Argentina, of all places.

I won’t go into the whole story…if you’re interested, you can click here. Basically, a copy of the original version of Lang’s film was sent from Berlin to Buenos Aires in 1928. There it stayed, changing hands over the decades while the cinematic world believed the full-length version to have been lost forever. Since then, various different cuts of the film have floated around, the most complete of which was released by Kino in 2002. Even so, this version is only 118 minutes long, with missing scenes supplamented by title cards explaining what happened within the gaps. With this discovery of the 210 minute print, a huge chunk of Metropolis can be seen by modern audiences for the first time. Though this print is apparently in rough shape and in need of work, it does seem to be complete. Martin Koerber, the man behind the most recent restoration of the film says that “no matter how bad the condition of the material may be, the original intention of the film, including all of its minor characters and subplots, is now once again tangible for the normal viewer. The rhythm of the film has been restored.”

I own Metropolis, but have yet to watch it. Part of me wants to wait, and see the full cut someday the way Fritz Lang intended. Another part wants to watch the 118 min version, in order to compare it to the complete one. Regardless, this is an amazing find: the complete version of a masterpiece from one of the most influential directors who ever lived. It also allows for hope that other lost movies may be rediscovered. I plan on writing another post about lost and/or recovered films soon. In the meantime, hold out hope that your favorite “lost” work might be found….it’s probably just behind someone’s couch in Peru, waiting to be rediscovered…

movie challenge 2005: chapter 7

The Blair Witch Project:

i really like this movie. the first time i saw it, with lori and jen and morty and chris (and i think others) way back when it was in the theaters, i left unimpressed. but when i re-watched it, i realized how wonderful it is. it leaves practically everything to the imagination. you never actually see any monsters or ghosts or anything, which is great. the acting is very good. and the story is good too. i also like how they went about making it. and i like how they went to all the trouble of making fake documentaries and stuff to help hype the movie. so if you’ve never seen it, i recomend watching it. and if you have seen it, but were unimpressed, i recommend watching it again. preferrably alone and in the dark, with the sound turned up.

The Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2:

what the hell is the book of shadows? after watching the film, i realized i don’t think it was ever even mentioned. the story is pretty interesting. it’s about a group of people who go out to the woods where the tapes from the first movie were found. they set up cameras and sit around drinking and stuff. then they black out, and when they wake up everything is destroyed except the tapes and they don’t remember anything. then they go back to one guy’s house to watch the tapes and more fucked up stuff happens. the acting is shitty at times. parts of it don’t work. but overall, it’s pretty good.

Bleed:

i’ll put it this way… lloyd kaufman plays a tiny roll in it, and that’s the best part. it’s your basic low budget slasher film. lots of boobs, fake looking gore, horrible acting, lame plot, etc. i don’t like slasher films.

Blood Thirst: Legend of the Chupacabra:

this movie was inspiring. if someone can get something this shitty released on dvd, then i KNOW i can make a movie. another low budget independent film. all shot on video with people who obviously aren’t actors. the writing was shit. the pacing was shit. everything was shit. it’s about the chupacabra, and they actually talk about some of the real theories, which is nice, but then they turn the chupacabra into a vampire who is going around killing people. so an old vampire hunter goes after it. then he kills himself to kill the vampire leader, thus ending the terror that all the vampires have caused, and ending the legend of the chupacabra.
