Belle & Sebastian is a band from Scotland that formed in the mid 90s. they named themselves after a french children’s book called Belle et Sebastien about a boy and his dog. i haven’t read it. it’s probably good? i feel like i should write more, but… i’ve got nothing. give it a listen, though, cuz you will like it. thanks.
here’s part of a live version:
and here’s another song from this album; “i’m a cuckoo”:
Morrissey. well… i think most people know who he is. he was in the smiths, ya know. and even reel big fish have covered his songs (here’s proof), so you know he must be at least as well known as ah-ha.
here’s a video. look how fucking ROCKABILLY these guys are. i usually HATE rockabilly guys, but i LOVE these babies. hey! nobody’s perfect.
this song is off of the 2003 album, “Deep Cuts”. i think you can buy it on their website.
the knife is a brother/sister duo from sweden. they don’t like mainstream music, and although they’ve won multiple awards for their music, they refuse to take part in all the crazy shinanigans that come along with it. examples: they avoid public appearances, refused to play live until recently, and wear masks in most of their promotional photos. they also boycotted the 2003 grammys, where they won best pop group of the year, sending in their place two people wearing gorilla costumes. supposedly this was a protest against male dominance in the music industry, but i’m not sure i understand what gorillas have to do with that. regardless… i support this anti-social behavior.
this is off of Scientific Cricket, which you can buy HERE!
grampall jookabox is the second “unknown” or “underground” artist on this mixtape. i guess it’s now a two piece, but it was just one guy on the scientific cricket album. we (beati paoli) played with him a couple of times, and i’ll tell ya THIS: he’s just as good live. check out the other songs, and make sure you go out to see ’em when they come tour through your town.
this is off their first full length (self titled). you can buy it on their website
the good, the bad, and the queen was formed in 2006 and is a bit of a SUPERGROUP with frontman damon albarn (blur, gorillaz) playing keys and singing, paul simonon (the clash, havana 3am) playing bass, simon tong (the verve, the shining) playing guitar, tony allen (co-founder of the AFROBEAT genre) playing drums, and danger mouse (gnarls barkley, dangerdoom) producing and playing random percussion/synths. albarn describes this album as “a song cycle that’s also a mystery play about London”.
the libertines were a band from 97-2004. they were very popular in england, earning a #1 album on the UK charts. then pete doherty loved drugs too much, so things got fucked up, and they split. here are some bands they are in now: Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, and Yeti. one more thing: Mick Jones of The Clash produced their albums.
