song (17):

Belle And Sebastian“Lord Anthony”

this song is off of the album “Dear Catastrophe Waitress”, released in 2003.
belle & sebastian dear catastrophe waitress album art

Belle & Sebastian is a band from Scotland that formed in the mid 90s. they named themselves after a french children’s book called Belle et Sebastien about a boy and his dog. i haven’t read it. it’s probably good? i feel like i should write more, but… i’ve got nothing. give it a listen, though, cuz you will like it. thanks.

here’s part of a live version:

and here’s another song from this album; “i’m a cuckoo”:

Morrissey“Certain People I Know”

this song is the 3rd single off of the 1992 album, “Your Arsenal”.
morrissey your arsenal album art

Morrissey. well… i think most people know who he is. he was in the smiths, ya know. and even reel big fish have covered his songs (here’s proof), so you know he must be at least as well known as ah-ha.

here’s a video. look how fucking ROCKABILLY these guys are. i usually HATE rockabilly guys, but i LOVE these babies. hey! nobody’s perfect.

song (15):

The Knife“Heartbeats”

this song is off of the 2003 album, “Deep Cuts”. i think you can buy it on their website.
the knife deep cuts album art

the knife is a brother/sister duo from sweden. they don’t like mainstream music, and although they’ve won multiple awards for their music, they refuse to take part in all the crazy shinanigans that come along with it. examples: they avoid public appearances, refused to play live until recently, and wear masks in most of their promotional photos. they also boycotted the 2003 grammys, where they won best pop group of the year, sending in their place two people wearing gorilla costumes. supposedly this was a protest against male dominance in the music industry, but i’m not sure i understand what gorillas have to do with that. regardless… i support this anti-social behavior.

Grampall Jookabox“Candle, Spirit, Leave”

this is off of Scientific Cricket, which you can buy HERE!

grampall jookabox is the second “unknown” or “underground” artist on this mixtape. i guess it’s now a two piece, but it was just one guy on the scientific cricket album. we (beati paoli) played with him a couple of times, and i’ll tell ya THIS: he’s just as good live. check out the other songs, and make sure you go out to see ‘em when they come tour through your town.

song (13):

The Good, The Bad, And The Queen“Herculean”

this is off their first full length (self titled). you can buy it on their website

the good, the bad, and the queen was formed in 2006 and is a bit of a SUPERGROUP with frontman damon albarn (blur, gorillaz) playing keys and singing, paul simonon (the clash, havana 3am) playing bass, simon tong (the verve, the shining) playing guitar, tony allen (co-founder of the AFROBEAT genre) playing drums, and danger mouse (gnarls barkley, dangerdoom) producing and playing random percussion/synths. albarn describes this album as “a song cycle that’s also a mystery play about London”.

blonde redhead. some music school assholes and some art school assholes got together in 1993. both steve shelley ,of sonic youth, and guy picciotto, of fugazi, have produced blonde redhead albums.

The Libertines“Up The Bracket”

this is off the album of the same name.
the libertines up the bracket album art

the libertines were a band from 97-2004. they were very popular in england, earning a #1 album on the UK charts. then pete doherty loved drugs too much, so things got fucked up, and they split. here are some bands they are in now: Babyshambles, Dirty Pretty Things, and Yeti. one more thing: Mick Jones of The Clash produced their albums.

song (10):

Aesop Rock“Coffee”

this is the last song off of his latest album, None Shall Pass. the extra “hidden” track, “Pigs”, is included in this mp3 cuz i was too lazy to chop it off. it’s good too, though.  artwork by Jeremy Fish.
aesop rock none shall pass album art

aesop rock. probably my favorite hip-hop artist of all time. i’ve been yelled at about this before, usually by people who only like one or two of his albums, but i honestly find his work to be much more interesting and fun to listen to, on a whole, than any other hip-hop artist i’ve heard. his first two albums were self-financed (which i can admire, for obvious reasons) in the late 90s before getting signed to Mush in 2000. “Coffee” features John Darnielle from The Mountain Goats and production from long time collaborator, Blockhead. check out this post for more mountain goats/aesop rock team ups.

song (9):

Bjork“Hidden Place”

off the album, Vespertine. i think you can buy it on her website.
bjork vespertine album cover

bjork. most people know about bjork, i think. icelandic singer-songwriter. wore a swan dress. beat up a couple of photographers. blah blah blah. before she went solo, she was in two bands: an anarchist punk band called KUKL (which i guess means ‘witchcraft’) and after that, a band called The Sugarcubes. i haven’t heard a whole lot of either of these bands, but what i’ve heard is VERY good. check ‘em out.

and here’s what bjork had to say about the vespertine album:
“It sounds like a winter record. If you wake up in the middle of the night, and you go out in the garden, everything’s going on out there that you wouldn’t know about. That’s the mood I’m trying to get. Snow owls represent that very well.”

Alixandra and the Tailor Sea“Black Crow”

this is off her first album. go to her myspace: myspace.com/alixandratailorsea.
alixandra and the tailor sea
(i couldn’t find the album cover online, but this is kinda what it looks like…)

alixandra and the tailor sea is the first unsigned/underground/independent/whatever artist on this mixtape. it’s basically just one person: alixandra macmillan-fiedel. she’s a singer-songwriter from santa barabara/new york, and she writes good songs. also, she is the co-organizer of ‘voices for a cure,’ a concert which benefits scleroderma research. you can read an article about ‘voices’ here.

if you like this song, check out her other stuff.
