National Game Registry 1982: Donkey Kong Jr.

original platform
key personnel
Shigeru Miyamoto

Donkey Kong Jr. offers more of the same platforming action as its predecessor, with four new stages, fairly different from the original and featuring new enemies like crazed birds and sentient steel traps.  The game’s biggest twist lies in the scenario; Mario is now the villain, Donkey Kong assumes the ‘damsel in distress’ role, and the hero is now played by DK’s young son.  The younger Kong appeared in a few more games but did not enjoy the wildly successful career of his father or his mortal enemyt.

Donkey Kong Jr. was inducted on May 16th, 2009.
