The PDP-1 was a “minicomputer” so-called because, although as big as a kitchen, it was miniature compared to the massive mainframe computers that were the standard in the decades before the 1970s home computer boom. Many of the applications for the PDP-1 were prefixed with Expensive, as these programs often performed rather simple functions that wouldn’t typically require a $10,000 computer. The PDP-1 would likely have fallen into obscurity if not for its proud status as the platform for the world’s first video game:
