UTOPIA
key personnel:
Don Daglow

original platform
Intellivision (1981, Mattel)

Utopia created an entire genre, paving the way for later mega-hits like Civilization and Sim City. The player takes governance of an island nation with duties including resources, infrastructure, welfare and security. The nation is threatened by pirates, overzealous fishermen and weather disasters. Utopia‘s optimum experience is provided by the 2-player mode, which pits two islands against each other while the single-player mode is a score attack. Players choose the number of rounds and the length of each round, allowing for a quick game or a much deeper affair.

Utopia was inducted on February 23rd, 2009.
