The yang to Street Fighter II‘s yin. Mortal Kombat rode the brand new fighting phenomenon to great heights by doing everything in opposition. The relatively tame violence of Street Fighter II is replaced by ridiculous gore and blood. Losing fighters can be murdered. The beautiful hand-drawn sprites are replaced by digitized photographs. The variety of Street Fighter II is also absent, as each fighter is basically identical save for special moves. A great success due to its bold and ridiculous qualities.
